Why Vote?

In the midst of the COVID pandemic, there is one event millions of Filipinos are looking forward to... Halalan 2022. It's time for Filipinos to, once again, exercise their right to vote for their national leaders. And as much as I'd like to talk about how to choose the right leader and such, there's a bigger question that we need to answer first. Why do we have to vote?

There are many reasons not to vote, I'm sure you've heard of some of them. The long and seemingly arduous process of registering. The indecision on which political leader is best suited for the position. The thought that one vote will not matter when there are millions voting anyway. And the doubts raised on the election process as a whole. So, why do we vote?

We all have our own reasons, but let me tell you why I do:

1. I vote because it is my right and my responsibility, as a Filipino, to choose the leader who will govern me.

2. I vote because I want my voice and my decision to be heard and be considered.

3. I vote because I choose to believe in the possibility that our country can change and can prosper at the hand of leaders who believe in same.

4. I vote because I want to set an example to the next generation that there are proper channels to express our personal convictions and beliefs.

5. I vote because I want to be part of the solution, instead be part of those who complain but do nothing.

6. I vote because I believe in freedom of expression and recognize the responsibility of said freedom.

Ultimately, I vote because it is a dynamic action. It helps us stand for what we believe in without others taking it against you, express ourselves without hurting others and hopefully direct our country to a better future. While it is true that there are things beyond our control, our inaction is not the solution to that problem. Our inaction, our decision not to vote, actually exacerbates it. If you truly want a better government, a better country, vote.
